Background of Nobel prize winners

The Nobel Prize in 2009 for Chemistry was awarded jointly to Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Thomas A. Steitz, and Ada E. Yonath. They achieved this award for their work done on Ribosome structure and function. Their paper is entitled; “Structure and function of the ribosome” and discusses how ribosomes produce proteins. It also explains how ribosomes are crucial to life and are a major target for new antibiotics. All three of them used X-ray crystallography which enabled them “to map the position” of the atoms that make up the ribosome. Three dimensional models were developed from this which was used to show the binding of antibiotics to ribosomes.
